On This Day in 1935…

On the 13th of June at Madison Square Garden in New York City, challenger James J. Braddock defeated the world heavyweight champion, Max Baer, in a 15-round match.

“The general reaction in most quarters was described as, ‘the greatest fistic upset since the defeat of John L. Sullivan by Jim Corbett’.”

This fight is the set piece of the Russell Crowe movie ‘Cinderella Man,’ which tells the story of Braddock’s life during the Great Depression.
