Although it didn’t beat out Titanic for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, it is now part of the United States Library of Congress’ Film Registry, which considers it – like Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, Citizen Kane, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Godfather and The Empire Strikes Back – to be worthy of preservation due to its’ importance.

Today is the nineteenth anniversary of the United States release of Curtis Hanson’s LA Confidential starring Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito, and David Strathairn. (And in a small role, the future star of The Mentalist, Simon Baker). Nominated for nine Oscars, it won two: best supporting actress for Basinger and best adapted screenplay.
