January 23rd 1992…(Or…it’s a suburb in Melbourne where the movie is set – because you know some of us wondered what was up with that title)

On this date, the movie Spotswood was released in Australia.

As described on the website Film Affinity, “Wallace is an efficiency expert, managing the high-profile downsizing of a major auto parts factory. But when he is hired to evaluate a small moccasin factory which seems from another era, Wallace has to reconsider the rapid modernization he advocates, as he is confronted by the human faces such plans hurt.”

IMDB: “An expert on productivity shows wacky workers in 1966 Australia how to run their moccasin factory like clockwork, despite laying off more than half the workforce.”

But let’s take a quick look at our cast and the trivia attached:

  • (Sir) Anthony Hopkins who, in 1991, performed his Oscar winning Best Actor role in The Silence of the Lambs.
  • Ben Mendelsohn, an Australian actor who became internationally known for his breakout roles in The Year My Voice Broke and Animal Kingdom. In 2016 however, his dream came true when he had a supporting role in Star Wars – Rogue One
  • Toni Collette, Australian actress who appeared in such films as Muriel’s Wedding, Little Miss Sunshine, the box office hit The Sixth Sense, and also Showtime’s United States of Tara. Spotswood was her first motion picture.
  • And a young fellow named Russell Crowe appearing in his fourth movie, who plays either Kim Barry or Kim Barrett, depending on your source. (And in a few cases, he’s just Kim, probably because they never heard a last name period).

In Australia, the movie grossed approximately $1,505,884 in Australia or about $2.3 million in 2009 dollars if you want to get detailed. It would be released under the title The Efficiency Expert in the United States later in 1992.
