London gets hammered…again.
The line Russell’s character uses about a new world of ‘gods and monsters’ was uttered back in 1935 in James Whale’s The Bride of Frankenstein (with Boris Karloff). The character Doctor Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) makes a toast – witnessed by The Monster – in which he says the classic line ‘To a new world of gods and monsters.’ Considering this new Mummy movie is from the same studio (Universal), the reference is a nice tribute to the classic monster days.
Gods and Monsters was also the title of the 1998 film starring Ian McKellan as director James Whale and Brendan Fraser (from the last Mummy franchise).
